Right Last Name—Wrong Guy. Azarenok and Petrovsky Falsely Blamed Oppositionist Kara-Murza for Betraying His Father

Both Belarusian pro-government media personality Grigory Azarenok and political scientist Pyotr Petrovsky falsely claimed Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza was a family member of Sergei Kara-Murza, a chemical scientist and publicist of the USSR and Russia.

They also blamed the younger Kara-Murza for betraying the elder with his behavior. The Weekly Top Fake team investigated the genealogical trees of both individuals.

The United States and Russia carried out a historic prisoner exchange on August 1, 2024, which involved the release of twenty-six people. Sixteen political prisoners from Russian prisons were exchanged for 10 Russians convicted in Western countries. Among them was Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza. In 2023, he was sentenced to 25 years in a maximum security colony for allegedly spreading fake news about the Russian army.

Following the news, both Grigory Azarenok and Piotr Petrovsky called the politician mentioned above the son of Russian chemist and publicist Sergei Kara-Murza. Here is what they exactly said on the air of the “Azarenok. Napryamuyu” program on August 1, 2024:

“Let's clarify: there is Sergey Georgievich Kara-Murza,” Azarenok said.

“And this is his son. And the son, in fact, betrayed his father,” Petrovsky added.

“Sergey Georgievich is a wonderful thinker, sociologist, and philosopher,” the host listed.

“I agree with that,” Petrovsky concluded.

“And the son turned out to be Judas,” Azarenok summed up.

“The son is a traitor, of course,” Petrovsky agreed.

Then, Grigory Azarenok discussed Vladimir Kara-Murza and his "father" with political analyst Andrey Lazutkin on August 5.

“They also recalled that this Volodya Kara-Murza is the son of Sergey Georgievich Kara-Murza, who is the author of the newspaper ‘Zavtra,’ the newspaper ‘Dien,’ the journal ‘Nash Sovremennik,’” Azarenok said.

The released Russian politician's name is Vladimir Vladimirovich Kara-Murza, and he is not the son of Sergei Georgievich Kara-Murza. Vladimir’s father was named Vladimir Alekseevich. He was a well-known journalist in the 90s. He died in 2019. The politician posted this on his social media.

In fact, Sergey Georgievich Kara-Murza, whom Azarenok mentioned, is a scientist-chemist and publicist is indeed his relative, but his father’s cousin.
